Engineering has always been an international profession.
The challenges we face, from infrastructure and energy to digital technology and sustainability, are increasingly global in nature. Engineers collaborate across borders, multinational organisations deliver projects in multiple jurisdictions, and engineering talent is more mobile than ever before. In this environment, internationally recognised standards are not simply desirable, they are essential.
That is the purpose of the International Engineering Alliance (IEA).
The IEA brings together engineering organisations from around the world to develop and maintain internationally recognised frameworks for engineering education, professional competence and mobility. Collectively, its signatories represent jurisdictions covering almost two-thirds of the world’s population, making it one of the most significant international collaborations within the engineering profession.
I had the privilege of representing Engineers Australia at an International Engineering Alliance Meeting alongside Emeritus Professor Elizabeth Taylor AO, AIRCDRE (Retd) Anker Brodersen and Bernadette Foley. It was an opportunity to engage with more than 200 delegates from engineering organisations across 25 countries, discussing accreditation, professional standards, governance, professional mobility and the future of engineering.
One of the most significant outcomes for Engineers Australia was the extension of our member status under both the International Engineering Technologists Agreement (IETA) and the Agreement for International Engineering Technicians (AIET) for a further six years. This represents the strongest possible outcome and reflects the dedication and expertise of many teams across Engineers Australia.
While these agreements may seem distant from the day-to-day work of most engineers, their impact is substantial.
The International Engineering Alliance oversees a family of accords and agreements that provide international benchmarking across both engineering education and professional competence. The educational accords recognise the quality of accredited engineering qualifications, while the professional agreements benchmark the competence expected of practising engineers, engineering technologists and engineering technicians.
Together, these frameworks help ensure that Australian engineering qualifications and professional credentials continue to be recognised and respected internationally.
For individual engineers, the benefits are often invisible but significant.
International benchmarking of accredited university programs helps maintain the quality and global recognition of Australian engineering degrees. Likewise, benchmarking professional competence through programs such as Chartered supports confidence that Australian engineers meet internationally recognised standards. This strengthens professional mobility, enables collaboration across borders and reinforces trust in Australian engineering capability.
These international frameworks also benefit Australia more broadly.
They help attract international talent, support Australian engineers working overseas, strengthen the reputation of our universities and provide confidence to governments, industry and the community that our profession continues to meet world-leading standards.
Participation in organisations such as the International Engineering Alliance is therefore about far more than attending international meetings.
It is about ensuring that Australian engineers remain connected to global best practice, that our accreditation and professional standards continue to evolve alongside the profession, and that Engineers Australia contributes to shaping the international frameworks that underpin engineering worldwide.
Engineering has always advanced through collaboration, the sharing of knowledge and the adoption of common standards. As our profession becomes increasingly global, those principles become even more important.
By working with our international counterparts, we are not only supporting the success of Australian engineers today, but also helping ensure that future generations continue to benefit from qualifications and professional credentials recognised and respected around the world.
