Trestle Digital was engaged to develop a strategic technology roadmap to support the expansion of a leading Australian university’s cybersecurity education programs. The engagement examined global best practice, future teaching requirements, technology platforms and operating models to identify the most effective approach for modernising the university’s cyber training environment. The Challenge

Demand for cybersecurity professionals continues to accelerate, placing pressure on universities to provide graduates with practical, industry-relevant experience rather than purely theoretical knowledge. At the same time, cybersecurity education is evolving rapidly, with increasing emphasis on hands-on learning, operational technology (OT), micro-credentials and industry certification.

The university recognised that its existing cyber training environment would not adequately support future teaching objectives or anticipated student growth. It required a clear understanding of how its programs were likely to evolve, what capabilities students and industry partners would expect, and which technology platforms would provide the greatest long-term value.

The engagement therefore focused on developing a technology roadmap that balanced educational outcomes, technical capability, scalability and operational sustainability while supporting future expansion across multiple campuses and delivery models.

Our Solution

Trestle Digital undertook a comprehensive review of the cybersecurity education landscape, combining international benchmarking with stakeholder engagement across academic, technical and industry groups.

The engagement examined leading cyber range implementations, emerging education trends, supplier capabilities and operational models before assessing how these could be applied within the university’s environment. Interviews with university stakeholders, cyber range operators and technology vendors were complemented by market research to identify best practice and future capability requirements.

Rather than recommending technology in isolation, Trestle Digital developed a strategic roadmap that aligned infrastructure investment with teaching objectives. The work included a high-level cyber range architecture, functional and technical requirements, supplier options, implementation considerations and recommendations for operational support and governance.

The engagement provided the university with a clear roadmap for modernising its cybersecurity education capability and supporting future program growth.

The recommendations established a structured pathway for technology investment, enabling decision-makers to evaluate future infrastructure, supplier partnerships and implementation priorities with greater confidence.
