AI in Higher Education: From Compliance to Creativity

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming part of everyday life in higher education. The conversation is no longer about whether universities should engage with AI, but how they can help students and staff use it effectively, responsibly and creatively.

One of the more encouraging perspectives emerging across the sector is that the AI narrative does not have to be dominated by risk. Governance, privacy and academic integrity remain critically important, but they are only part of the story. Equally important is the opportunity to use AI to enhance creativity, improve productivity and help people transform ideas into tangible outcomes.

That optimistic perspective was reinforced during the Universities Australia Solutions Summit through discussions with leaders from higher education and industry.

A particularly compelling insight came from Canva, which has seen extraordinary global adoption of its AI-enabled tools. The underlying philosophy was refreshingly simple: AI should not replace human ideas. It should amplify them.

Rather than asking whether AI is replacing creativity, the more interesting question is how creativity itself is evolving. Across universities, students and academics are already using AI to develop visual content, support writing, generate teaching materials, prepare grant applications and collaborate on new ideas. In many cases, AI is becoming another tool within the creative process rather than the process itself.

This shift presents universities with both an opportunity and a leadership challenge.

How do institutions provide students and staff with the confidence and capability to use AI effectively?

How do they protect data, intellectual property and institutional reputation?

How do they encourage responsible experimentation while maintaining appropriate governance?

And perhaps most importantly, how do they move from isolated pilot projects to institution-wide capability?

Universities are already exploring different approaches. Some have developed institution-specific AI platforms, while others have introduced dedicated education licences that provide staff and students with secure access to leading AI tools. These initiatives recognise that successful adoption requires more than technology. It requires governance, education and a willingness to learn through practical experience.

One framework discussed during the summit particularly resonated with me. In an AI-enabled world, students increasingly need four complementary capabilities:

  • An editor’s eye to critically evaluate AI-generated outputs.
  • The ability to curate context by providing meaningful prompts and information.
  • Tool literacy across an expanding ecosystem of AI applications.
  • Most importantly, the human intent, judgement and creativity that give technology purpose.

These capabilities represent an evolution in education rather than a replacement for traditional skills. Students will still need to understand their disciplines, solve problems and think critically. AI simply changes how those capabilities are applied.

This also changes how we think about learning. The future is unlikely to be about execution alone. It will increasingly combine ideation with execution, enabling students to generate, test and refine ideas more quickly while focusing greater attention on judgement, creativity and problem-solving.

Healthy debate about AI in education will continue, and it should. Universities have important responsibilities around ethics, privacy and academic integrity. However, responding to AI primarily as a compliance issue risks overlooking its potential to improve learning and prepare graduates for a rapidly changing workforce.

If creativity is becoming one of the most valuable capabilities graduates can possess, then AI presents an opportunity to rethink how universities foster that creativity. Rather than viewing AI as a threat to education, the sector has an opportunity to position it as a catalyst for better teaching, deeper learning and stronger graduate outcomes.

The challenge is no longer whether AI belongs in higher education. It is how we ensure people have the skills and confidence to use it well.
