Space has a unique ability to capture the public imagination.
The image of an Australian astronaut launching into orbit is inspiring in its own right. Yet while human spaceflight may be the most visible symbol of a nation’s ambition, its greatest value often lies not in the mission itself, but in the capability it leaves behind.
That was the focus of a panel discussion I joined at the Australian Space Summit, where we explored a deceptively simple question:
Can one astronaut transform a nation’s capability?
It is an important question because it encourages us to look beyond the launch pad and consider the broader impact of major national endeavours.
For me, the answer is yes, but perhaps not for the reasons many might expect.
The mission is the milestone.
The engineering capability, workforce and national agency we build around it become the legacy.
Throughout history, ambitious engineering projects have done more than achieve technical objectives. They have inspired young people, accelerated research, strengthened industries and developed generations of engineers capable of tackling increasingly complex challenges.
Human spaceflight has the potential to do exactly the same.
While Katherine Bennell-Pegg’s future mission would undoubtedly represent a significant milestone for Australia, its greatest contribution may be as a catalyst for something much larger. It provides an opportunity to inspire students, attract investment, strengthen industry collaboration and encourage Australians to think differently about engineering, science and technology.
During the discussion, I suggested that while sovereign capability is an important concept, sovereign agency may be even more important.
Australia does not need to own every satellite, artificial intelligence model, semiconductor fabrication facility or advanced technology.
However, we do need to understand the technologies we depend upon, recognise the capabilities we cannot afford to lose access to, and make deliberate choices about the capabilities that will underpin our future prosperity, security and resilience.
That is what sovereign agency means.
It is the ability to make informed national choices rather than having those choices dictated by external circumstances.
Increasingly, technology is no longer simply an economic issue.
Engineering, artificial intelligence, communications, energy, advanced manufacturing, cyber security and space technology now sit at the intersection of economic competitiveness, national resilience and geopolitical influence. The investments we make today will shape Australia’s ability to compete, collaborate and respond to future challenges for decades to come.
The encouraging reality is that Australia begins from a position of considerable strength.
We have world-class engineers, outstanding researchers, globally respected universities, innovative companies, abundant natural resources and strong international partnerships. What matters now is bringing those strengths together within a coherent long-term strategy that deliberately builds the capabilities Australia will need in the future.
Engineering has always been about solving problems that matter.
Today, those problems extend well beyond the technical. They include economic resilience, technological independence, national security and the ability to shape our own future in an increasingly complex world.
Whether the catalyst is a space mission, a major infrastructure project or a breakthrough in digital technology, the principle remains the same.
Individual achievements may capture our attention, but it is the capability they build across society that ultimately defines their lasting value.
